Home-Start Spelthorne
We're there for parents when they need us the most,
because childhood can’t wait.
About Us – Meet our Trustees and Patron
Home-Start Spelthorne is a local charity set up in 1996. Home-Start Spelthorne has continued to grow and fulfil a need within our local community. We are affiliated to the national organisation Home-Start UK, but are independent, autonomous and responsible for our own management and for raising our own funds. Home-Start UK provides advice and support together with a stringent Quality Assurance review process to ensure the scheme operates effectively.
Home-Start is a voluntary organisation in which volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families under stress in their own homes, thus helping to prevent family breakdown.
Staff and Trustees
The charity is run by a board of Trustees who are volunteers from diverse backgrounds with particular skills and an interest in children. Our Trustees are responsible for the management and direction of the scheme.
Currently, we have eleven trustees and five members of staff, together with a network of trained volunteers who carry out the home-visiting parent support service.

Kevin Bulfin

Kevin retired after 35 years working as a Human Resources professional in the Aviation, Electronics and Pharmaceutical industries and was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. He spent the last ten years leading the HR function of a £1.8 billion multinational healthcare company.
Kevin has been a Trustee for HS Spelthorne since 2013 and focuses on providing advice on people, organisational and business management matters. He strongly advocates the importance of children having stable and nurturing family environments and believes that Home-Start plays a critical role in supporting this.
Lesley Clark
Trustee
Lesley became a trustee in 2025.
Lesley brings a wealth of experience to HS Spelthorne, having spent 18 years as an Executive Assistant at British Airways. Prior to that, she worked in the creative industries, supporting an independent film and television company, and the Head of Single Drama at the BBC.
Now retired, Lesley enjoys a vibrant and active lifestyle. Her interests include travelling, participating in the U3A and the WI, Walking for Health, and even tap dancing!
A resident of Spelthorne since 2022, Lesley is delighted to be part of HS Spelthorne and values the essential role it plays in supporting the local community.
Barbara Griffin
Trustee
Barbara has been involved in early years care and education since 1970. She became a home-visiting volunteer with HS Spelthorne in 2013, and when she retired from her job as Nursery Manager, at Staines Preparatory School.
Barbara was very proud to became a HS Spelthorne trustee in 2022, and is a valued member of our PR & Fundraising team, and heads up our “Friends” group.
During her time working and volunteering in early years, Barbara has seen many changes and, sadly, a decline in the immediate support available to families.
To quote Barbara ” Being a parent can be tough and I believe that by offering the right practical and emotional encouragement our volunteers provide an invaluable service in our community”.
Christine Knight
Trustee
Christine retired from the airline industry after a 39 year career in a wide variety of roles in the UK and US. Her career focussed on marketing, customer services and project management.
Christine joined HS Spelthorne as a trustee in 2018, when she retired. She enjoys her role as Chair of the PR and Fundraising Committee, and benefits from the support of a great team. She enjoys arranging fun events, and attending local fairs, not only to raise funds, but to increase the profile of HS Spelthorne.
Christine enjoys skiffing on the Thames, walking and travelling in the UK and overseas.
Mick Price
Treasurer
Mick has lived in Spelthorne for over 40 years, and has been a supporter of Home-Start for much of that time as a result of his wife’s professional involvement. He became a trustee in 2023.
Mick’s career started in the early 1970s, providing support and repair of early computer systems, working on a mobile basis in central London. He progressed through a number of management roles, all involving customer service and support, and became the UK Field Manager for a supplier of networking equipment to major multi-national institutions, including banks, oil companies, insurance companies, etc. More recently he worked for an international agency managing the contractor workforce for a global professional services company. His entire career has been focussed on customer service, ensuring satisfaction through the associated workforce, together with managing the financial and budgetary controls that go with it.
Sue Price
Trustee
Sue has lived and worked in Spelthorne and neighbouring Hounslow for over forty years, bringing up her family and working as a Health Visitor.
As a Health Visitor, Sue found Home-Start Spelthorne an excellent charity in supporting families in need and crisis. There is so little support for families in the community and Sue believes Home-Start fills this role admirably.
When Sue retired in 2013 she became a trustee, and was the safeguarding trustee for eight years. She continues to be a hard working trustee.
Dianne Roberts
Trustee
Dianne has been a social worker and social work manager in both children’s services and the voluntary sector for forty years.
Dianne became a trustee in 2021, and is our Safeguarding trustee and committed to quality assurance.
Dianne enjoys the way Home-Start supports vulnerable families by building good relationships and empowering parents.
Viv Talkington
Trustee
In 1996 Viv responded to an advertisement asking for Home-Start Spelthorne home-visiting volunteers. Her youngest son had started school, and she had a little extra time during the week to spare. Viv did the preparatory training course and was soon matched with a family. She then went on to help set up a family group that was especially for those families being supported by Home-Start.
Viv started a new job with the NHS in 2000, and had to give up being a HS volunteer, but she still maintained contact with Home-Start. She continued to hear good things about HS and how it continued to be a real asset to the community by giving support and friendship to parents with young children going through difficult times.
Viv retired from the NHS in 2021, she was asked to consider becoming a trustee, it didn’t take long for her to say yes.
Viv is our Wellbeing trustee, and in this role she is always available to support both staff and volunteers.
Patron
Jenny Sice
Patron
Jenny worked for the NHS as a ward sister, then a midwife until she decided to become a health visitor and work within the community. She remained in this job for 36 years in the borough of Spelthorne.
After many years it became obvious to Jenny that the help available in the local community for families needing extra support was diminishing. Subsequently she was invited to a meeting where the guest speaker was a senior member of staff from HS UK; who spoke so positively about Home-Start schemes, and Jenny was sold. She could see the benefit HS support could give to local families.
Jenny joined a small group of experienced volunteers, who felt as she did, that a HS scheme in Spelthorne would benefit the community. Jenny became a trustee in 1995 and is one of our founding trustees..
Jenny is very proud to have been a trustee of HS Spelthorne, and now our Patron. Jenny believes HS Spelthorne is an extremely well organised and staffed charity. To quote Jenny, “I look back with great pleasure to my time spent as a trustee of HS Spelthorne”.
