Margaret Seager received a Civic Award for service to the Guide movement since 2005, for the past 16 years she has been Leader of the 2nd Shepperton Guides. Allied to this unfailing commitment, since 2015 Margaret has been a Home-Visiting Volunteer with Home-Start, an invaluable local network that supports young families and children against the challenges of daily life.
Spelthorne Borough Council paid tribute to 18 volunteers at the Civic Trust Awards, which honours residents for their voluntary service in the Borough, in the ceremony on 19th April.
Spelthorne Civic Award Trust recognise individuals who have given at least 12 years’ service to volunteering in the Borough, while letters of commendation are awarded to those who have done a further 10 years. Between them this year’s winners have given more than 200 years of service to the Borough and represent the best of our communities.
The evening, which was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey Michael More-Molyneux, included a presentation of a specially commissioned embroidery award to recognise the contribution of volunteers from Spelthorne during the Covid Pandemic. This was presented to Voluntary Support North Surrey to recognise the extraordinary impact volunteers had supporting residents in the Borough.
Cllr Ian Harvey, Mayor of Spelthorne for 2021/22, said: “It is a privilege to reward these fantastic volunteers with their Civic Awards. These winners represent the best of this Borough as they have put the needs of others above their own. I also want to commend Voluntary Support North Surrey for their special award in relation to their incredible work coordinating volunteers over the last two years of the Coronavirus pandemic. We also know that many good deeds go unnoticed so, if you know someone who has been serving their community, we urge you to put their name forward so they can be appreciated by the wider community.”
Colin Squire, Chair of the Civic Awards Trust, said: “The men and women honoured this year have given decades of service to help make our community a better place and, on behalf of the Civic Awards Trust, I commend them all for their hard work and dedication. It is truly staggering to see the overall length of service these people have given to Spelthorne. We are fully aware that there are going to be other dedicated volunteers out there whose work has gone unheralded so, if you do feel someone deserves the Civic Award, please do get in touch with us by emailing civicawards@gmail.com.”
